I feel this one big and can believe I didn’t think of this before. “When sacred spaces cause sensory overload | The sounds. The lights. The overwhelm. I wanted to worship. My body said no. I didn’t realize until recently I could wear headphones and accommodate myself the same way I do my children. Jesus slipped away to rest, too. Holiness is not just in the noise. I believe God meets us in the quiet places outside the crowd. That He honors the quiet, solitary worship of those who find Him on the margins. I think the hush is holy, too.”
Yes! We attend a church that is much more mellow even in contemporary worship, but I went to a Christian conference recently that had a much more rock concert energy to it - I had to wear headphones and the second day, I just chose to go in a little late.
Yes, I love Buddhist chanting but it can be quite loud and resonant in ways that are difficult for those with auditory sensitivity. We use headphones in so many places but somehow hadn’t even thought about that option at the monastery where I attend. Thank you!

1, 18, and 32 especially resonate with me. I've been holding on to Isaiah 57:15 this Lent:
For this is what the high and exalted One says—
he who lives forever, whose name is holy:
“I live in a high and holy place,
but also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit,
to revive the spirit of the lowly
and to revive the heart of the contrite."
God dwells in the low places, too. To quote The Princess Bride, "Anyone who says differently is selling something."
💕 I love this verse. And I am DELIGHTED you quoted both Isaiah and The Princess Bride. Truly magnificent.
Bahaha. Thank you. I think of that quotation a little too often when I hear prosperity gospel nonsense. :)
🤣🤣🤣
Thank you! I try to remain hopeful, hard as it sometimes.
